Projected Cowboys Signings
LT Flozell Adams – 4yrs/28 mil
The more I think about Adams, the more I think we will find a way to
re-sign him. He will get a better offer, but Jerry Jones will treat him
right. He says he wants to stay in Dallas and he probably will
though each day hour that passes without a new deal makes this
less and less likely.
RB Jessie Chatman – 1yr/1 mil
I’ve been thinking and we basically have to bring in a veteran
backup for Marion Barber. If Jones is gone, Barber is the only back
on our roster because Tyson Thompson doesn’t seem to be much
of an option. I still want a RB on the first day, but even then you
need three of them on the roster and some protection in case a
rookie can’t contribute immediately. Barber could probably play a
season without much help, but if he got hurt we would be in trouble.
Chatman seems to be the best option available for a low cost. He
isn’t fast, but he has averaged 4.7 yards a carry for his career.
Other options included Tatum Bell, Mewelde Moore, and Chris
Brown. I will take whichever of these guys I can get for the lowest
cost.
The bottom-line is that we need a body at the very least. You can't
go into the draft saying you have to draft two guys that need to
make your roster at one position because you never know how the
draft is going to sort out.
CB Fernando Bryant - 3yrs/7mil
Cornerback is exactly like running back in that we are lacking
bodies on our roster. Henry and Newman are the only sure things
we have. Again, you can't go into the draft saying you need two
rookie cornerbacks that have to make your team.
Bryant was a bit of a bust in Detroit because of injuries, but he was
a decent starter last season when he played all 16 games for the
first time in Detroit. He wouldn't make a drastic difference, but he
would be an improvement over Jacques Reeves. His contract also
wouldn't keep us from taking a corner in the 1st which I still think is
our #1 concern heading into the draft.
WR Donte Stallworth. – 3yrs/12 mil
I think we need some help at wide receiver. I don’t think you can
count on Terry Glenn or any of the young guys we currently have.
Patrick Crayton is solid, but he isn’t much of a #2 receiver. We
were fine most of last season at WR, but our entire offense fell
apart when Owens got hurt. Now, Terry Glenn at 90% of his old
self is better than Stallworth, so if Jerry and Wade think he can
come back they probably don't need another veteran receiver but I
don't think we will ever see Terry Glenn at 90%..
Stallworth seems like a good fit in Dallas. He gives us the speed
and athleticism that will complement Crayton and Owens nicely.
Like Crayton, he is more of a #3 receiver, but if you put the two
together with Owens you have a really good receiving corp. Four
million a year isn’t all that bad either if you consider Crayton’s new
contract (4yrs/14mil). I definitely wouldn’t pay any more than that
for him, but for a reasonable price I think he would be a solid
upgrade. He may not be sexy, but he would help balance our
receiving attack. He would also not keep us from drafting a WR
with one our first round picks.
There you have it. I don't see us making any big splashes other
than re-signing Flozell. Still, we will improve our team with the
additions of Stallworth and Bryant without breaking the bank. If
Flozell doesn't re-sign though I would expect us to try to spend his
money somewhere else. Jerry doesn't want to have a worse team
in 2008 and that is a distinct possibility with no Flozell Adams.
Is Jerry Asleep At the Wheel?
Dallas has been quiet so far this off-season, but that isn’t
necessarily a bad thing judging by the contracts given out so far. I
still think we will make a couple of moves, but they may not be for
another week or so.
Still think we overpaid for Patrick Crayton? He had a terrible time in
the play-off game, but he is about as good as Donte Stallworth and
Jerry Porter, both of which got nearly twice as much money as
Crayton did.
Not wanting to overpay isn’t the only reason we haven’t been active
thus far in free agency. We can create extra cap space if needed,
but we have a bit less than five million to play with. You aren’t going
to be adding much more than depth with that amount of money.
Zach Thomas is the only veteran we will bring in that can really
improve our team. I’m really glad we signed him now. He is a slight
risk, but he could be a major upgrade to our defense which is more
than you can say for many of these guys getting huge contracts out
there.
Two positions I think we will fill between now and the draft are
running back and cornerback. Those are two of the top three
needs going into the draft, signing guys in free agency won’t
change that. We simply need depth at both spots. Like I’ve said
before, you don’t want to go into the draft saying you need to find
TWO running backs and TWO corners just to fill out your roster.
That is how thin we are at both spots. He probably only have five to
six spots up for grabs on our roster next summer, and four of them
our at those two spots. We need vets and rookies at both positions.
Cornerback is the number one need for this football team. Jacques
Reeves sucked, but the reality is he is better than any of the guys
we have right now. Expect us to bring in a low cost veteran like
Fernando Bryant, Andre Dyson, Bennie Sapp, or Kelly Herndon.
Again, none of those guys keep us from taking a corner in the 1st
round. CB should be our first pick. It is a top heavy corner class.
One of the top four of Aqib Talib, Mike Jenkins, Leodis McKelvin,
and Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie should be available at #22. As
long as one of those guys is available, I think that will be our first
pick. If not, we will likely have to reach with #28 to one of the 2nd
round guys like Tracy Porter or Brandon Flowers. This is a strong
corner class, but this is probably the most in demand position in the
NFL right now.
I would say running back is our third biggest need behind wide
receiver. We have more depth at receiver, but Barber is a good
young running back who we has at least 4 or 5 more good years.
At receiver, we have aging veterans and unproven youngsters. I
acknowledge that a rookie receiver probably won’t help us much
next year, but we need to set our self up for the future at that
position. Maybe Glenn can at least contribute as a third receiver
next year although I think he is pretty much done.
Look for us to bring in a veteran running back. This guy might not
even make the team. Best case scenario you would have two
young guys step up to. People get a little to caught up in thinking
rookie running backs can contribute. It is probably the easiest
position to play as a rookie, but just because you take a back on
the first day doesn’t necessarily mean you have a suitable back up.
Take Green Bay for example. This year, they spent two draft picks
on Brandon Jackson and DeSean Wynn. Neither guy performed
particularly well as they had planned. Their running game was
terrible until Ryan Grant emerged. I looked at the numbers of all
the runners drafted in the first three rounds last year and there
were really only two guys out of seven that had good rookie years.
These players were Adrian Peterson and Marshawn Lynch. Brian
Leonard was the only other guy to have at least 300 yards rushing
and he had but 303. We need backups that can give us 500 yards
rushing.
The guy I’m interested in is Warrick Dunn. He has expressed
interest in playing for us, but we don’t seem too interested. I know
he doesn’t have much left. I didn’t watch Atlanta last year though so
he may not have anything left. He is a guy we probably would have
already signed if he were going to. His asking price would be low
from the beginning so it isn’t a situation where we are waiting for the
cost to go down.
At one time I thought Tyson Thompson could be a possible option
at back up running back, but we didn’t even give him a restricted
free agent tender. Heck, we gave Joe Berger the tender, but not
him. That tells you what the staff thinks of him.
We really do need to pick someone up though. I don’t want to pay
over the veteran minimum, but that could get us someone like
Tatum Bell, Derrick Ward, Chris Brown, or Jesse Chatman.
It has become pretty obvious we are going to improve the most via
the draft. That is fine with me. We at least brought back all of our
starters which is something none of the other elite teams can say.
Really good teams usually get slightly worse this time a year and
they have to rely on young guys to step up and replace the
veterans they lose. We have the luxury of keeping all our veterans
while having two first round picks and many young guys who can
only upgrade over the vets. We don’t have single starting position
where we are going to heavily rely on a rookie and that is always
good judging by the lack of impact our rookies have had the past
two years.
