Cowboy's
Trivia
Question of
the Week!

Who is the oldest
player on the
Cowboys' roster?

Last Week's Answer:

Danny White
 Tim's Talk:  Wildcard Weekend

1.  Sorry it has been a while.  Christmas came and plus there was a
death in my family so here goes my thoughts from the last two
games.

2.  Yeesh.  Ugly, ugly and did I say ugly?  I know we won the
Carolina game and Green Bay lost to Chicago and we clinched
home field advantage plus we had nothing to play for against
Washington.  But come on we need to have some momentum going
into the playoffs.  Let us start with the Carolina game.  The defense
was awesome.  We were minus Roy Williams and Pat Watkins and
still managed to shut down the Panthers running game and confuse
Panther QB Matt Moore and except for that one long pass, the
passing game for the Panthers in check and considering how the
defense did a good job the previous week against the Eagles, we
can take that into consideration.

3.  Now for the ugly.  The offense was dismal in the second half and
good in the first half.  The reason of course is TO.  He means a lot
to the offense and let no one say otherwise.  It was no coincidence
that the Cowboys struggled to move the ball and keep ball
possession when TO went out.  But even so, the Cowboys offense
needs to make adjustments.  TO might not be able to play in the
first playoff game considering those high ankle sprains are tough to
heal from.  SO the boys need to have that confidence that they can
still win without TO.  Which is why I was disappointed in the Redskin
game but more on that later.

4.  I know the Redskin game meant nothing.  By luck we had
nothing to play for.  But still you want the team to go through some
momentum into the playoffs and on a positive note.  If the first team
offense had not played so long I don’t know if we had this feeling.  If
Romo had only played a series or two, there would be no talk of the
struggling offense.  Bur the fact that Marion Barber could not get
1,000 yards, Terry Glenn did not catch a pass and it took Romo a
half to break the Cowboys season record for completions does not
do anything good for the psyche of this team.  I mean the record
was not significant.  It was not the NFL record just the Cowboys
record.  1,000 yards does not mean the same as it did 15 years
ago.  If I had been coach, Romo would play a quarter and a half,
just enough to get some rhythm going with the first team and with
Terry Glenn.  Also the field was in terrible shape, Glenn should not
have been out there in those conditions.  14 wins is important but it
is not 16-0.  Stopping the Redskins from going to the playoffs
means something but not as much as stopping a team from going
16-0.  These guys do not to be out there.  It may have been better
for them not to play at all, now they may be lacking the confidence
or I hope they did nto approach it with a win out effort because if
that was the effort, we are in trouble.

5.  I am worried about Jason Garrett’s play calling.  Garrett to many
times has abandoned the run and gone to the pass.  Granted he is
a former QB and tends to favor the pass.  And the Cowboys
passing game has been on fire all season, but the way to win in the
NFL is still control the clock by running the football.  We ran well
and won in the Carolina game despite an overall lackluster
performance by the offense.  We abandoned the run and lost in
games to Washington and Philadelphia.  We need to be persistent
running the football.  Noticed I said persistent, not successful.  I
mean we don’t abandon the passing game and Romo has had
some bad games of late so why abandon the run because it is not
doing as well?  We need to keep doing it.  And that is by sitting
Julius Jones.

6.  This team reminds me of the 1994 season, the season mind you
not the team.  That team started 11-2 before losing 2 of the final 3
including a bad home loss to Cleveland, a lackluster offensive
performance and standout defensive performance on the road
against New Orleans and lost a meaningless game on the road
against New York.  Sound familiar?  That team would lose the NFC
Championship.  It is no coincidence that the three Super Bowl
winning teams from the nineties finished the season on strong
notes.  Which means moods were upbeat during the first round
bye.  You think Green Bay is sweating any right now?  Just some
concern to be brought to attention.

7.  The bottom line is this.  The Cowboys need a healthy Owens to
play and he is usually a quick healer.  Second if he does not play,
they need to get through themselves that they can win a game
without him.  Those performances in Carolina and Washington did
not do good psychologically.  Third the rest of the team needs to
heal up including the offensive line, Andre Gurode in particular, Jay
Ratliff, and Pat Watkins.  The Cowboys must use the home field
advantage as much as they can.  The Texas Stadium crowd is not
know to be as fierce as Philly, Denver or other notable tough
crowds but the fans need to get behind their boys as much as
possible.  Do something risky during the game.  Do a fake punt,
onside kick, fake field goal, or go for it on fourth down.  But time it
right.  Pick the right time and situation to do it.  A call like that can
get a team’s morale a huge boost and more fired up.  To offensive
coordinator, do not abandon the run and do some kind of stuff to
get TO involved early.  Put him in motion in the slot or in the
backfield.  Do some innovation.  You know for a QB that has some
foot speed, you don’t see many rollouts or bootlegs from the
Cowboys.  Try some of that.  And I am sorry but put Julius Jones on
the bench and give Barber the bulk of the carries.  To defensive
coordinator Stewart and coach Wade Phillips, this is your specialty.
Do something about the coverage.  It is no coincidence that
Washington can beat you all and I say Washington because I have
a suspicion we will see them again.  I mean who did not think that
Chris Cooley was not going to get the ball all that time?  My
suggestion would be to go with a fifth DB most of the time the nickel
package.  I know that will remove someone but it seems we are
more vulnerable to the pass and Clinton Portis was the first runner
to gain 100 yards all year but I feel the nickel package gives us the
best opportunity to execute zone coverage’s, blitzes, and applying
pressure.
 Cowboys vs. Giants Part Three

Sorry I haven't written in so long.  I've been extremely sick for the
past ten days and I've barely been able to leave the house.  The
Washington game was one of the most miserable games I've ever
watched.  Between the game itself and watching it in the emergency
room, I don't think I've ever been so bored with a game.

I don't take too much from the Washington game.  If we come out
flat against the Giants then I might revise that thought.  The Giants
had something to play for and we didn't.  We wanted to win that
game, but it is hard to keep that edge when you know it doesn't
mean anything.  I also don't think we wanted to show Washington
anything.  They were already in the play-offs before the game
started.  Why show them all the stuff you like to run when you might
have to play them for real in two weeks?  They would see
everything on film, but seeing it in person is a huge advantage.
That is still not making excuses so, we got our butts kicked.  The
Redskins carried the momentum they got with this game and
carried it all the way up to Seattle where they lost by three
touchdowns.  Sometimes momentum is overrated.  The games that
build momentum can be extremely draining.

We really missed Terrell Owens and Terence Newman in this game.
Santana Moss repeatedly roasted Jacques Reeves.  We've got to
get some corners for next year.  We basically only have two worth
having right now.  I honestly think we will draft two corners in the
first three rounds if possible.  We need them that badly in
comparison to every other position.  Our roster is rock solid, but we
need help in the secondary.

I sure hope Owens is effective against the Giants.  He will play, but I
don't know how healthy he will be.  Maybe he can at least be a
decoy because we have had games this season when he didn't
have but three catches, but our offense was still explosive because
of his presence.  We have to get our mojo back on offense.

Terry Glenn's return was uneventful.  Phillips surprised me by
playing him in nasty weather when he said he wouldn't.  He only
played a little while as they sat him out after LaRon Landry hit his
knee late.  Glenn said he was happy because he know has
confidence he can get hit in the knee.  I have news for Terry, it
getting hit isn't going to hurt it.  He isn't recovering from a torn ACL,
his problems are degenerative.  He is going to slowly wear his knee
out, he isn't going to suddenly re-injure it.  Hopefully he can at least
provide a little something on offense.

I pray our offensive line plays well against the Giants.  They are the
number one reason we have beaten them twice.  The Giants beat
quarterbacks up with their front seven, but they couldn't touch
Romo in either match up.  That is a key storyline for next week's
game when you are looking for things that might change this time
around.

Playing the Giants again makes me nervous.  It is pretty difficult to
beat a good team three times in one season.  They know us better
than anyone.  I would have much rather played Tampa Bay for the
first time, but I can't complain, at least we don't have Seattle.  They
played so well against Washington on defense that they may
actually be the favorite in Green Bay.

Back to the Giants, again, they make me nervous.  This team is
11-4 when they don't play the Dallas Cowboys.  Us Cowboys fans
don't think they are all that great because they couldn't beat us, but
don't be fooled.  This team can beat us if we don't play a good
game.  We are much healthier than they are, but we can't afford to
come out flat next Sunday.

Later this week I will have a detailed game preview.  We have all the
advantages going into the game with home-field advantage, rest,
and the regular season meetings.  The Giants have the momentum.
I'm worried we are going to come out flat and be one of the team's
that struggles with the bye.  Hopefully we can flip the switch and
play great football as I know we can.  I know that can be hard to do
though when you haven't been playing your best.
