Cowboys Grind Out Panthers
Well, it wasn't the prettiest thing I've ever seen, but a win is a win. It
was well on its way to being a blowout in the first half, but Terrell
Owens's injury really hurt us. It is pretty apparent how much he
means to this offense after watching it bog down and score only
three points in the second half. We will struggle to win a play-off
game if we don't have him or at least Terry Glenn. We will need
Owens to beat Green Bay.
The defense had its second straight good outing. We gave up
some big plays to Steve Smith, but the Panthers still only had 13
points. Our run defense was stout besides for one play, and our
pass rush was outstanding. DeMarcus Ware now has 13 sacks.
Tony Romo had a good bounce back game. He had a great first
half although he cooled down in the second half. It wasn't really
hard though. Sam Hurd and Patrick Crayton aren't going to get
open consistently if they face anything other than single coverage.
The Panthers put their most physical corner, Richard Marshall, on
Jason Witten which limited him.
The biggest story from this game is the Terrell Owens injury. His
high ankle sprain is scary this later in the season. Anthony Henry
missed a month with the same injury and he is just now getting back
at full strength three months later. I will say though that Owens is a
very quick healer. The fact that he came back to play in the Super
Bowl in 2004 was nothing short of amazing. Henry also recovers
pretty slowly as he seems to have nagging injuries every year. It
also helps that Owens plays receiver and not cornerback. Owens
knows when and where he has to make cuts and plant on his ankle.
It is much harder for a corner that has to react to a receiver. Henry
is slow to begin with so he had to be close to 100% to play, Owens
would help at 80%. Still though, three weeks is awfully optimistic
and it wouldn't surprise me if he missed the first play-off game.
Tank Johnson and Jay Ratliff are forming quite a duo inside. Ratliff
had another stellar game. Tank Johnson is starting to show up a
bit. He seems to make a few plays a game which is a lot
considering the limited snaps. His roughing the passer penalty hurt,
but I thought that call was BS.
The defense didn't seem to miss Roy Williams at all. Keith Davis
came in and made some plays. He broke up two passes and made
a couple of nice stops in the run game. He really struggled when he
started in years past so I'm giving some credit to Ken Hamlin. He
isn't the most athletic guy, but he is always in position to make plays
and he seems to get other guys in position as well.
I'm happy the Bears beat the Packers. We know don't have to
worry about beating a hungry Redskins team. We don't need to
rest starters as we need all the practice we can get. I'm sorry, but
Tony Romo doesn't have enough experience to sit.
Terry Glenn is expected to return next week. His return is even
more important with Owens's injury. This guy has gone from an
extra toy to a necessity if Owens misses the divisional play-off game.
Marion Barber had a great game. He ran hard and broke into the
open on several occasions. On a 4th & 1 play, he was stopped way
short of the first down, but he fought his way across the line. He
had me pumped watching the game last night. He brings a much
needed attitude to this football team. He gets the offensive lineman
fired up, he gets the defense fired up, and he gets the fans in the
game. He is quickly becoming my favorite player.
9 1/2 Point Underdogs To the Redskins?
I'm amazed at how big of an underdog we are in Sunday's game.
Everyone just assumes we are going to roll over and let the
Redskins ride into the play-offs. "Dallas is going to rest their
starters and the Redskins just have to much to play for." I don't
know about you guys, but I'm not buying that. I may be biased, but
if I was a betting man I'd bet Dallas can lose by 9 points our less.
The one thing I've learned from this team is to never underestimate
them. Half the Redskins team is backups including the quarterback,
so what makes you think some of our young guys won't come in and
play great. Those guys are going to be hungry and eager to show
what they can do. Besides, you can only rest so many guys. Every
guy on our 45-man roster plays on Sundays. That means you can
really only completely rest eight guys. You can put special teamers
like Bobby Carpenter and Justin Rogers in on defense, but most of
our starters will be playing against Washington.
I'm actually really excited to see how young guys like Pat McQuistan
perform in this game. Veterans like Flozell Adams will get pulled
pretty early on. That guy doesn't need any practice. I'm anxious to
see how McQuistan does because he is getting a live audition for
the left tackle spot. If he looks great, we have the advantage of
knowing that we don't absolutely have to re-sign Adams. If he
struggles we will have to pay Adams whatever he wants.
Another guy I'm anxious to see is Stanback. I'm not sure that we
actually will see him, but it would be great if we did. I was impressed
with his athleticism in pre-season and the one game he returned
kicks.
In short, this game is meaningless and I understand how people
think we are going to lose. I'm just not buying it. Maybe I'm not
giving the Redskins enough credit as a football team, but I still
expect us to win the game. Hopefully I'll be right and we can set a
franchise record with 14 wins.
