Final 53-Man Roster Prediction

The pre-season is in the books and it's time for my final roster
prediction.  Teams have to be down to 53 players by late Saturday
night.
QB - Romo, Johnson, Moore

Moore looked to good not to put him on the roster.  No way we
could get him on the practice squad.  He has shown me enough to
think that he will probably be a guy that we will groom for two or
three years.  His two fumbles weren't good, but he was accurate
and he looked comfortable heading the offense.

RB - Jones, Barber, Thompson

With Jackie Battle cut because of injury, there was little competition
for Thompson.  Alonzo Coleman looked decent but he came into the
picture too late.

FB - Hoyte, Anderson

I really can't see Polite making the team again.  I don't think he is as
good of a blocker as these two and his special teams play isn't as
stout.  He has been around it seems like forever now and he hasn't
really improved.

WR - Owens, Glenn, Crayton, Hurd, Austin, Stanback

The only real battle is between Austin and Jerheme Urban.  Urban
had that long punt return for a touchdown but he still doesn't
impress me.  He looked like he was running in quicksand on that
entire return.  He made a few nice moves, but he would get nothing
against a 1st team coverage team.  He also negated this by losing a
fumble.  Austin has way more potential at wide receiver and that is
what wins him the job.

TE - Witten, Fasano, Curtis

I'm finally on the Tony Curtis bandwagon.  He had a great
pre-season.  I guess a light went off in his head between now and
the NFLE season.  He looked great as a pass catcher and solid as
a blocker.

OL - Adams, Kosier, Gurode, Davis, Colombo, McQuistan, Free,
Marten, Procter, Berger

I'm not sure we can actually keep 27 offensive players, but I can't
see us only having one guy (Procter) backing up guard and center
either.  Berger can play both and we need that depth.

DL - Spears, Ferguson, Canty, Ratliff, Hatcher, Bowen

The only backup nose tackle left on the roster is Remi Ayodele.  If I
was GM I'd be trying to sign Joe Salave'a.  Unless he is hurt or
something he would be the perfect backup nose tackle.  It wasn't
two years ago he was a solid starter.  From what I hear he can still
play a little its just that the Redskins have some younger options
they decided to go with.

I think Stephen Bowen is a better player than Remi Ayodele.  He
isn't a nose tackle though.  Look for us to eventually try to pick up a
true backup nose tackle at some point.  I also wouldn't be totally
surprised if we started the season with only five defensive lineman.
You couldn't make it through a season like that, but you could last a
month.

LB - Ware, Ayodele, James, Ellis, Spencer, Carpenter, Burnett,
Glymph

These eight are the most well known of the group.  Everybody
seems to think Ellis is okay so he stays.  Glymph stays because we
need another pass rusher with the questionable Ellis.

DB - Newman, Henry, Glenn, Reeves, Butler, Williams, Hamlin,
Watkins, Brown

I honestly have no idea who will get the last two cornerback spots.
They might not even be on our roster right now.  Reeves seemed to
play better Thursday night.  I haven't seen much of Butler but that
isn't necessarily a bad thing for him as bad as the other guys have
looked.

At safety you have a bit of a logjam.  I'm not sure how high the
coaching staff is on Courtney Brown.  If they think he has starting
potential they will keep him.  I'd guess they'd cut Davis but they
might would cut Watkins if they only believe they can keep one
developmental safety.  I could easily see a scenario where all five
guys make it.

Special Teams - Folk, McBriar, Ladouceur

Folk was probably going to beat out Gramatica anyway, but Martin's
injury was the nail in the coffin.  It is actually good for Dallas though
because if Folk falls flat on his face we will have a better chance of
re-signing Gramatica since he would be just coming back from an
injury.
A Few Surprises During Final Cuts

All I can say is WOW!  Aaron Glenn is no longer a Cowboys.  There
is a distinct possibility Jacques Reeves is our starting cornerback
Week 1.  Tell me that doesn't scare you.

I'm not happy with this move, but I see why we made it.  Aaron
Glenn looked noticeably slower this pre-season.  He really
struggled about as badly as some of the younger guys so why not
go with the fresher legs.  Granted, I think they could have had
better timing cutting the guy (wait for Newman to come back).

Here is the list of cuts:

QB Matt Moore
QB Richard Bartel
WR Mike Jefferson
WR Damarius Bilbo
WR Jerheme Urban
TE Rodney Hannah
TE Adam Bergen
LB Junior Glymph
LB Blair Phillips
LB John Saldi
LB Khari Long
CB Joey Thomas
CB Aaron Glenn
CB Quincy Butler
RB Arliss Beach
DT Remi Ayodele
G Trey Darilek
OL Matt Tarullo
RB Alonzo Coleman
FB Lousaka Polite
DE Marcus Smith

There really weren't many surprises after Glenn.  I would have kept
Matt Moore, but that isn't a surprise that they didn't.  There were
two things that seemed weird though.  We kept six safeties and
seven linebackers.  Tell me that isn't crazy.  I know that Abram Elam
and Keith Davis are great special teamers and I could definitely
have seen us keeping five because of that, but come on, six!

We are looking super thin at linebacker.  We have three outside
linebackers counting Greg Ellis!  Now I know that Burnett and
Carpenter can play there but still.  I would have kept Glymph just
because of the uncertainty with Ellis.  I'm not a big fan of Glymph
because he has been around forever and he hasn't done much but
it would be nice to have a veteran out there.

I pretty much guessed right on everything else last night.
Gramatica was put on IR and we will probably release him with an
injury settlement.  He would be available to sign after six weeks
which makes it easier for us to re-sign him since nobody can sign
him immediately.  Miles Austin beat out Urban.  Curtis beat out
Hannah and Bergen.  We also kept both Corey Procter and Joe
Berger.  Stephen Bowen made the team giving us only one true
nose tackle among six lineman.

At corner, I think we kept the right guys if we were going to cut
Glenn.  Without Glenn you go from wanting potential to experience.
Jones and Reeves haven't improved a lot, but at least they have
the experience needed to be the nickel and possibly starting
corner.  Alan Ball also made the team as the young developmental
cornerback.
