Cowboy's
Trivia
Question of
the Week!

Who holds the
Cowboys' single
season passing
yardage record?

Last Week's Answer:

Purdue
Five BIG Questions

Here are five big questions that must be answered as the Cowboys
head into the 2007 season.

1.  How GREAT will Tony Romo be?

I'm pretty convinced Romo is the real deal.  The question is though,
how great will he be.  At the very least he will be an above average
quarterback which should be enough to get the team into the
play-offs, but if he is one of the Top 5 quarterbacks in the league
next season you can get ready for a February game in Arizona.
This offense would be a good one with Brad Johnson at the helm.
With a repeat Pro Bowl quarterback at the helm it could be the
league's best.

2.  Can the secondary improve?

Wade Phillips isn't known as a guy who will help your pass
coverage.  We will need to get above average or better play from
this unit if our defense is going to be an elite unit.  The biggest
weak spot in the secondary was free safety.  I think Ken Hamlin will
do a decent job of filling that role.  The scrutiny will now fall solely
on Roy Williams.  Ken Hamlin is good enough to hold is own, but he
isn't good enough to cover up for Roy's mistakes so it will be
interesting to see how Williams performs.

3.  Can I get some D-line play?

The biggest weakness on paper of the entire team in my opinion is
the defensive line.  We lack top end talent as well as depth.  Jason
Ferguson is a good player, but the defensive ends were horrible
last season.  I've come to realize that Canty and Spears are never
going to be great players, but hopefully Wade Phillips can get them
playing a little bit better because we need them badly.

4.  Where's the rush?

Pass rush shouldn't be too big of a problem this season if Wade
Phillips does his job.  He doesn't quite have the tools he had in San
Diego but he has some talented linebackers to work with.  Someone
besides DeMarcus Ware has to step up and apply consistent
pressure.  On the surface this seems easy enough with Greg Ellis
and Anthony Spencer, but there is no guarantee either one of them
will be particularly productive this season.

5.  Can we stay healthy?

While last season's team is starting to sound less healthy than it
actually was, we still only had one vital player that missed significant
time.  We must avoid the injuries that seem to wreck one or two
good teams every season.  We are off on the wrong foot with the
early rash of injuries in camp, but none of them seem to be serious
although I'd keep a close eye on Terry Glenn.

There you have it.  If the answer is positive to three of these we
squeak into the play-offs.  Four could mean a spot in the
conference championship.  Have all five of these questions go your
way and we could be looking at a championship club.
A Few More Camp Observations

Here are some highlights from a friend of mine who spent a few
days in San Antonio.

Richard Bartel has the stronger arm, but Matt Moore looks more
accurate and composed.  I'd still give Moore the lead in the 3rd QB
battle.

The team is looking more and more healthy. Terrell Owens returned
to practice.  Adams and Colombo aren't going to play Thursday
night. Doug Free worked at LT and Pat McQuistan at RT the past
few practices so I suspect that could be the starting lineup.
McQuistan could give Colombo a run at the right tackle starting spot.

Isaiah Stanback still hasn't ran in any drills, but he was in full pads
so he must be getting close.

Tony Romo had his first off practice on Monday.  He looks human
folks.  He overthrew quite a few passes, but he still wasn't terrible.

Matt McBriar continues his stellar play.  He is putting nearly every
punt deep down the field and between the numbers and the
sidelines which makes it nearly impossible for the returner to find
any openings.

The Cowboys have introduced a 2-4-5 nickel package.  It seems to
be very disruptive because you have no idea who is rushing and
where they are rushing from.  The starters in this scheme are
Bowen, Ratliff, Ware, Spencer, Burnett, and Carpenter.

Speaking of Carpenter, he is looking good on inside blitzes.  He can
easily dispose of backs and tight ends which could mean seeing
him in opponents backfields quite often this season.

Courtney Brown is starting to struggle at safety.  He is very athletic,
but he seems overwhelmed mentally.  I'm not sure he will make the
team if he can't improve.

Both kickers have been great in camp.  I'm giving Folk the edge.
He has only missed one field goal.  While Gramatica has been great
too, he has to be better than Folk to stick around because all things
equal the team will keep the young guy.  Folk will have to win the
job based on field goals though because his kick-offs aren't any
better than Gramatica's.

I will have a detailed analysis of the pre-season game.  Roster
spots are won and lost during these games.  These practice reports
are entertaining, but they aren't nearly as important as the games
themselves.
