SOMETHING MORE IMPORTANT
By: Larry Petton
It has been a tragic week for sports fans. We have had the bizarre
death of Mike Coolbaugh, third base coach for the Tulsa Drillers
minor league team, who was struck by a line drive and killed during
a game in Little Rock . We have been shocked by the sudden
death of Scott Prosser, the beloved head basketball coach at Wake
Forest , who fell over dead while jogging. We have been angered
by more steroid accusations against eventual home run king, Barry
Bonds. Surprise, surprise, surprise.
We have grown sick of Vick and all his legal entanglements that
have banned him from training camp with the Falcons. And many
have turned in their keys and resigned as NBA fans after the
numbing allegations of an NBA referee with Mafia ties who actually
bet on the playoff games he officiated. Of course, I am sure that
none of this affected the outcome of the game. Raise your hand if
you believe that, Steve Nash.
Personally, I can’t wait for the NFL to come back to my TV set.
Where have you been?
Romo, Romo, wherefore art thou? Thank God for the NFL Network
where football addicts can find therapy during the off season.
In the midst of all of this, there are sports stories that lighten the
heart and bring a tear to the eye. Such a story comes out of Bean
Town where the Red Sox have experienced another miracle. And
this one is far greater than breaking the curse of the Bambino. How
about breaking the curse of cancer?
The Big “C” word is always easier to handle when it is someone
else. But John Lester, at the ripe old age of 23, heard the “C” word
about the same time he was making his dream life happen as a
starting pitcher for Boston. Red Sox Nation was traumatized last
September when the Bosox announced their rookie left-handed
pitcher had been diagnosed with a rare but treatable form of
anaplastic large-cell lymphoma. Over the next months, Lester
would undergo six chemotherapy sessions that eventually
eradicated the disease, but left him weakened. However, John
Lester began the long climb back and finally made it back to the big
leagues this week.
On Monday night, July 23, the young pitcher, whose rookie season
ended suddenly last season when he was diagnosed with cancer,
pitched six innings to win his first game in 11 months and lead the
Boston Red Sox over the Cleveland Indians 6-2 . "Wow, it's a great
story," knuckleballer Tim Wakefield said, glancing in the direction
of Lester's locker.
“This isn't even about baseball," Curt Schilling said. "It just doesn't
get any better the way a guy like that comes back to us. It's about
family. The big thing is that he's a great human being and that
makes it an even better story. “
Projected as the top left-hander to come through the team's farm
system since Bruce Hurst, Lester did not disappoint last season. He
became the first Sox rookie to win seven games since Ken Ryan
and Aaron Sele in 1993 and was the first Sox rookie lefty to win his
first five decisions. But cancer has no respect of persons. Even
star athletes, like Walter Payton, get cancer in spite of being in
peak condition. Teammate Mike Lowell, third basemen for the Red
Sox, battled through testicular cancer in 1999 but is back to full
health once again.
Anaplastic large-cell lymphoma accounts for less than 3% of all
lymphomas but is one of the most curable forms, according to
Jeremy Abramson, attending physician at Massachusetts General
Hospital Cancer Center in Boston. Abramson, who did not treat
Lester, says given the pitcher's age and functioning, "The chance
of relapse should be on the favorable end of the spectrum … only
10%."
Now, everything in life has been placed into a new perspective for
John Lester. "If John has an inning where he gets in trouble, it's
going to seem so minute after what he's been through," Papelbon
says.
Yes, I am excited that the Cowboys are back in camp. Oh, yeah, I
can’t wait to see them play their first preseason game. Am I ever
fired up about the possibilities of this season as well. But, in the
grand scheme of things……there is something more important.
Thank you, John Lester, for reminding us to put everything back
into perspective. Thank you, John Lester, for giving sports fans an
inspirational lift in the midst of one of the lowest levels of integrity in
the history of American sports.
Barry……..enjoy your tainted home run record.
Vick……... have fun with your dogs before you begin your long
vacation.
Donaghy…...get help.
John Lester…thanks for being a fighter and an example for all who
battle the Big “C”.
You are a real American hero.
Another Early Roster Prediction
I realize these are kind of pointless at this time, but I like writing them
so what the heck!
QB – Tony Romo, Brad Johnson, Matt Moore
The top two are set. I really liked Matt Moore coming out of Oregon
State. We don't have to keep a 3rd QB if there isn't one worth
developing (see last season) however I see us trying to groom Matt
Moore for a few seasons.
RB – Julius Jones, Marion Barber, Tyson Thompson
The only battle here is for the 3rd spot. Alonzo Coleman is out and
Jackie Battle isn't a true running back. I think we will keep
Thompson because Coleman could be added to the practice
squad. By the way, Thompson is returning most of the kick-offs so
far so read whatever you want into that.
FB – Oliver Hoyte, Deon Anderson
Hoyte will be the starter. Polite has been around for three
unimpressive seasons. Anderson will make the team if he shows
any promise at all, and if he doesn't we will cut him and keep Andy
Thorn for a 4th tight end.
WR – Terrell Owens, Terry Glenn, Patrick Crayton, Sam Hurd,
Miles Austin, Isaiah Stanback
The only guy I see threatening this list is Richardson. He really
didn't impress me all that much though. If Richardson does beat out
someone it would probably be Miles Austin or maybe Stanback if he
doesn't get back on the field here pretty quick. Sam Hurd is safe.
TE – Jason Witten, Anthony Fasano, Adam Bergen
Bergen and Thorn will battle it out for the third spot. Experience
wins out and we still can have Thorn on the practice squad.
OL – Flozell Adams, Marc Colombo, Pat McQuistan, James
Marten, Doug Free, Leonard Davis, Kyle Kosier, Corey
Procter, Andre Gurode, Joe Berger
The five tackles are pretty much set because Free and Marten
where fairly high draft picks. The first three guards and Gurode are
all but guaranteed as well. That leaves one spot at backup center.
Procter started camp there, but he has started playing more guard
(to win the starting job?). Berger is currently the backup center and
I think he edges out Trey Darilek.
DL – Marcus Spears, Chris Canty, Jason Hatcher, Jay Ratliff,
Jason Ferguson, Montavious Stanley
We are going a little light on the defensive line, but we just don't
have many quality guys there. Stanley is currently the backup nose
tackle with Ratliff working more at defensive end.
LB – DeMarcus Ware, Anthony Spencer, Greg Ellis, Bradie
James, Akin Ayodele, Bobby Carpenter, Kevin Burnett, Blair
Phillips
There is really only one linebacker spot up for grabs. It will be a
battle between rookies Phillips, Harrington, and Obomese. The
team likes Obomese's potential, but Phillips gives them a potential
special teams ace. Junior Glymph is also a factor, but he has been
around long enough to have showed us more than he has.
DB – Terrence Newman, Anthony Henry, Aaron Glenn, Joey
Thomas, Courtney Brown, Ken Hamlin, Pat Watkins, Roy
Williams, Keith Davis
The only sure things in the secondary are Newman, Henry, Glenn,
Hamlin, and Williams. Pat Watkins should make the team based on
potential and he does have some experience. Joey Thomas has
really caught my eye. I dug up a bio on him and it was an
interesting story. The guy nearly beat out Ahmad Carroll his rookie
season. Still, he was a solid nickel corner for the Packers. Then
halfway through the season he gets burned and then falls down on
a touchdown catch against the Vikings. His game falls apart, the
Packers cut him before the end of the season. The next year he
has a mediocre season with the Saints. He sits out of football all of
last season. Sounds to me like he lost his confidence because the
guy was a 3rd round pick and you can see that ability. He has great
size and he can run. He makes the team no problem.
The 4th safety spot comes down to Abram Elam and Keith Davis.
Both are excellent on special teams, whichever proves better in that
area wins the job. The guy to watch for in the secondary is
Courtney Brown. He was a big, fast corner in college. Dallas has
already moved him to safety and word is that he looks great playing
the deep middle. He will be the 9th DB that could play safety or
cornerback in a pinch as well as being a great developmental guy.
K – Nick Folk
P – Matt McBriar
LS – LP Ladouceur
I think Nick Folk is on his way to beating out Gramatica. He isn't
doing as well as expected on kick-offs, but he is making all of his
field goals. This guy won't last on the practice squad because he
will be the first guy a team tries to pick up if their kicker gets hurt. If
he has a good pre-season he will win the job.
Practice Squad
OLB Alex Obomese
DE Marcus Smith
NT Ola Dagundro
CB Alan Ball
RB Alonzo Coleman
TE Andy Thorn
ILB Dedrick Harrington
DE Stephen Bowen
