Purdue
Special Teams and Training Camp

I just wanted to let you guys know that I'm going to be at training
camp this Wednesday through Friday.  I will see either 3 or 4
practices.  I'm not going to take notes while I watch since I'm going
with family and I just want to enjoy it, but I have a pretty good
memory and I should be able to write some pretty detailed write ups
of the practices.   I will try to have them by next Sunday or Monday.

Now for the final series of the roster breakdown.  Special teams.

Special teams is the most overlooked facet of football.  It is a vital
part of a football team as all of us now with the botched snap.
Special teams are also the best gateway for a young inexperienced
player to make a football team.

I think kicker, punter, and long snapper are pretty set.  Nick Folk
wasn't very impressive in mini-camps so I really don't see him
beating out Gramatica.  He could make the team as a kick-off
specialist, but Gramatica did a decent job at that last season.  I
think Folk would do just fine on the practice squad because I doubt
anyone would pick him up.  Matt McBriar isn't even competing with
anyone because he just got a fat new contract extension.
Ladouceur has done a great job in his two seasons and I don't even
think we have another long snapper on the roster.

The return spots should be interesting.  I'd say let Tyson Thompson
and Miles Austin battle it out.  This battle is critical because
whichever guy loses the battle will have a difficult time making the
team.  I'd probably give the edge to Austin.  He isn't as fast as
Thompson, but he has good vision and he has a TD to his credit
which is something Thompson doesn't have.  Thompson always
seems close to breaking one, but he hasn't done it yet.  Either way,
we will have a good kick returner.

Punt returner is also going to be an interesting position to look at.  I
liked the Crayton/Newman combo of last season.  Crayton got all
the returns that would either be fair catches or returns with little
hope of a return.  Crayton isn't a good returner, but he catches the
ball and he will usually do decent if he actually gets some room to
return the ball.  Terence Newman is simply electric with the ball in
his hand.  He broke one for a TD against the Lions and he was
close countless other times.  I know you are risking injury to one of
your best players, but you can't minimize how much he is helping
your team.  Every return that he has some open room I hold my
breathe and fully expect him to break a long one.  I love players that
instill confidence in me as a fan.  He also keeps you from having to
keep a return specialist and when he gets his fat contract in two
years his return ability will help us maximize our investment.
Training Camp Report:  Day 1

Well I was kind of disappointed when I discovered this practice was
going to be in shorts.  I didn't learn that until last Sunday, but what
are you gonna do.  I still saw some things, but I'm disappointed
because it means I will only be able to see either two or three
practices in full pads.  I wanted to stay down here longer, but I'm
doing the best I can.  On to the observations.

1.  The one guy that really stood out on offense was Andy Thorn.  I
knew he was on the practice squad last season, but I didn't think
much of him.  This guy is really fast for a tight end.  He moves at
least as good if not better than Jason Witten.  Now he did look
pretty skinny so he probably isn't a good blocker, but I'm definitely
going to watch him tomorrow in pads.

2.  The surprise starter at right tackle was three year veteran Jim
Molinaro.  Adams and Colombo are out with injury and James
Marten hasn't signed yet.

3.  Leonard Davis is huge!  His feet are the biggest feet I've ever
seen.  They looked huge from across the field.  He also has the
biggest head I've ever seen.

4.  The only interesting part of practice was the short 7-on-7 drills.
Romo was the only QB that took a few chances down the field.  The
rookies were too scared to mess up and Brad Johnson isn't going
to go deep very much.

5.  The deep passes offered the best excitement in these drills.
Terrell Owens beat Anthony Henry and Ken Hamlin for the only TD
of the session.  Miles Austin beat the coverage on one play but
dropped a deep route.  Terry Glenn beat Anthony Henry on a
double move, but Henry got in his way enough to mess up the
routes timing which led to an overthrow.  This was a short session
and I didn't really see anything else of note.

6.  Speaking of T.O., he got by far the biggest ovation when he
came on the field and every time he caught a pass.  That is the
dumbest thing we fans can do.  We are feeding his ego.  He was
walking around in his tights like he was the greatest thing since
sliced bread.

7.  Julius Jones also showed something to me that I already knew
was true.  The guy is obsessed with his arms.  He has huge arms
and he showed them off by sporting a sleeveless jersey and I saw
him flex a couple of times.  The problem is big arms don't do you
any good in football.  It bothers me because his legs aren't very big
and if he spend more time on them instead maybe he might actually
break a tackle.

8.  A guy that stood out somewhat in the secondary drills was Joey
Thomas.  He has played in 25 career games and you could tell.
The guy looked like he knew what he was doing.  Don't be
surprised at all if he makes this team.

9.  Special teams had some interesting story lines.  Terrence
Newman returned every single punt in the two hour practice.  Nick
Folk and Martin Gramatica were both equally ho-hum with kick-offs
with both guys only getting the ball to about the seven yard line on
average.  The didn't attempt anything but short field goals but they
did hit all of them.

I should have a lot more observations tomorrow when they are
actually in pads.  There are two practices and I will try to report to
you guys tomorrow night.
