I Need Help With This Site!
I'm asking anyone who is a fan of this site to become a co-writer for
it. I have a new job that will take away from the amount of time I can
put into this website. I'm probably only going to have time for a
couple of articles a week, which is hardly enough to keep visitors
coming back. All you would have to do is e-mail me the article and I
would be able to post it and give you credit for it.
Have your opinion heard! A different viewpoint would be great for
this site. Please e-mail me if your interested. My e-mail address is

Davis Signed, 1st Weekend Wrapped Up
Well, the Cowboys got who they wanted in the first 72 hours of free
agency. Leonard Davis was their number one target from day one
and they got him. I'm really warming up to this signing although I
wish we could have gotten him for a little cheaper. However, we
didn't really overpay for him though its just the market is so rich
right now. He got 7 yrs/49.75 mil with 18.25 million guaranteed.
The reason I like this signing is Davis's talent and versatility. He is
the biggest man in the NFL. He is 6'6 365, but he isn't overly fat
and he is surprisingly athletic. He has the tools to be dominant, but
he hasn't been. He is known to be lazy and uninspired. He was
also played out of position the last three seasons at tackle. This
man should be a guard, which is where I think he will play in Dallas
no matter what happens with Colombo. His ability to play tackle
does come in handy though, because if we can't find a suitable
replacement for Flozell after next season (we should re-sign him
though) he can play left tackle decent.
Now for the rest of free agency. We aren't done signing players.
Martin Gramatica should be re-signed offically within the next 24
hours. We have also expressed interest in Joey Porter. I'm not
sure what I think about that. He is an amazing player and a vocal
leader our defense lacks, but he will get a contract similar to what
we gave Davis. It would be money well spent though if that is what
it takes to improve our pass rush. Jerry should ask for Wade's
input on this one. If Phillips' thinks his system can generate a
strong pass rush with the players we have then we shouldn't sign
Porter, but if he doesn't like what he has seen from Burnett and
Carpenter then I say make a run at him.
I tend to think we need help with the pass rush. Wade's system will
help, but look at last years numbers. They were only so-so with a
healthy Greg Ellis, and his full recovery is questionable at best.
Even if Ellis comes back, there is a big-time question mark about
whether he can play OLB or not. He can't lose any athleticism and
still be able to play the position. He was really too slow to have any
business playing it anyway. That means there's a good chance
Greg Ellis might only be a situational pass rusher.
Wade Phillip's system will help though. Kevin Burnett looked good
in the Tennessee game and I think he could flourish next season.
But again, I wouldn't put all my defensive hopes on it. I would like
to dispel the notion that Burnett is too small to play OLB. Look at
the guy. He is big, strong, and high cut. He can play the position
folks. It also depends on how Wade looks at Bobby Carpenter. Me
and Bill Parcells see a blitzing manic at ILB who gets eight sacks a
season from that spot. Phillips might think he is better suited at
OLB. I will say though that his versatility is a huge plus. If we bring
in Porter, Carpenter would start at ILB, if we don't bring in anyone,
its likely he would start at SOLB and play decent.
One guy who we seem to be having trouble re-signing is Marc
Colombo. I really want this guy back. I think he has just scratched
the surface of his potential. He was a run blocking machine at
Boston College, and I don't think he has totally gotten back his
lower body strength. We really need to re-sign this guy even if it
means giving him four million a year which is probably realistic in
this market.
A guy to watch for if we can't land Colombo is Jordan Black. He
was the starting left tackle for Kansas City last season. They have
already signed Damien McIntosh to man that position. Black is
young, and he can play every position except center. He would be
nice because he could put him at right tackle, then move him to the
left side if Flozell isn't retained. Black isn't a great player, but he is
in the mold of Kyle Kosier and more than serviceable.
We got our #1 target, but I still have a few more wants on my wish
list. I would love it if we could sign Joey Porter and Colombo as our
two other major signings. Then, if we could get Patrick Ramsey,
Tim Rattay, or Brad Johnson as backup QB and Gramatica I would
be in heaven. I know that signing Porter might be pushing how
much money we are spending, but that would be an awesome free
agency period. I still think we would be in decent financial shape.
We can go ahead and cut Rivera which will save us quite a bit and
we could trade/cut Greg Ellis if necessary. If we can't get Porter
maybe we could get Banta-Cain, Deon Grant, or Kevin Kaesviharn,
because all those guys would knock a need of the list while not
costing nearly as much as Porter.Our only real needs going into
the draft would be free safety (what do you know, its the best FS
crop in years) and a developmental receiver. Here's to hoping that
dream comes true.

Free Agency Period Cooling Off
The free agent pool has been thinned considerably after today.
Joey Porter and Tully Banta-Cain both signed today. Those were
the only two remaining guys we could sign to help our pass rush.
We could possibly sign Carlos Polk, but he is not starting material.
Our number one focus needs to be re-signing Marc Colombo. All
the alternatives at tackle have disappeared. There is nobody else
available that would warrant us giving big money to. We may have
been holding off a little on Colombo's offer to see if we could spend
that money more wisely (Joey Porter?). We aren't going to be
dishing out anymore big money so we really should do everything in
our power to get Colombo locked up. Jordan Black, one of my
alternatives, received very negative reviews from a few Chiefs fans I
know so I'm not excited about him anymore.
So with just two new players brought in, who are some more
possibilities? I can think of possibly four players. If you have any
more, list them at the blog. These players are Kevin Kaesviharn,
Deon Grant, Kevin Curtis, and Donte Stallworth. Both of the
receivers are long shots. We would only consider them if we were
going to cut Terrell Owens and even if we did I believe the staff is
content with Crayton and Glenn. The most logical choice would be
Kaesviharn. He is the perfect guy to pair with Roy Williams. He
excels in coverage, and he is always around the ball. The man had
6 INTs & 4 sacks last season. He isn't very stout in run support, but
he isn't just horrendous either. Deon Grant is the only other free
safety option not counting bringing back Tony Parrish. Grant isn't
wanted back by Jacksonville because they have young talent
behind him. Grant is a decent all-around safety who would solidfy
that position. Ken Hamlin's name has been tossed around, but he
isn't any better in coverage than Roy Williams.
Things are really starting to shape up after today. All of the elite
players have signed meaning anyone we sign from now on will only
be moderately priced. My mock for the rest of the free agency is
simply re-signing Marc Colombo. We may target a FS, but we've
made no contact with any of them to my knowledge. I think Jerry's
waiting on the deep free safety draft class to fill that need. A
reserve linebacker like Carlos Polk or a backup center/guard like
Matt Lehr are possibilities as well. Overall, we are about done in
free agency. We filled two big needs, so if we can get Colombo
signed I'll be a satisfied fan.
